Meet Team Member Charlotte Cross - Staff Profile
Meet Charlotte, one of the InfoSec People’s Researchers and Resourcers. Charlotte has joined us directly having graduated from university but it was not her intention to join a recruitment company as we found out:
‘I was born in Essex and moved to Cheltenham when I was 18 months old. I’ve spent my life here ever since. I attended Bourneside School and went on to study Business Management and Finance in Cardiff. Not only was I interested in it but I discovered I also had a flair for it. The course was really broad covering subjects like ethics, law, operations, leadership, change and finance. I had a part time job at Next whilst studying. I wanted to be a teacher as a girl and still didn’t really know what I wanted to do after university but I was approached by Chris to come and have a chat about some roles. It was only when I met him that he revealed he was thinking of employing me himself at InfoSec rather than looking at me as a potential candidate for one of his clients! My dad was a recruiter and I recognised a lot of what Chris said as similar language to him. I was really excited by it.
I knew virtually nothing about cyber security and technology when I joined, only what I had to learn for my GCSE. Having worked at InfoSec 5 months I’m amazed at what I know now. I used to hear people talking and wouldn’t have a clue what they meant. Now my technical knowledge is right up there. I can understand and relate to very deep IT conversations. It’s a shame the industry is so male orientated, there just aren’t enough women, there needs to be more. The pay is good but there are pressures too. One thing I’ve found shocking is how devastating it can be when a whole project is ruined by someone making a simple mistake. The knock-on effect can be huge. There’s set to be heavy investment with more advertising and marketing so I hope to see more women attracted to the industry in future’.
Out of work Charlotte enjoys what she describes as the three ‘C’s: cats, cooking and cocktails. She has a passion for Italy and Greece and her favourite place to escape in the UK is Croyde in North Devon. She’s a pasta and seafood lover who can be impatient. ‘I hate slow walkers’ she says. ‘In my job as a resourcer I don’t like having to let people down. It’s the nature of recruitment though and thankfully is outweighed by the day to day satisfaction of talking to people and knowing you are doing your best for them. Gaining a placement is always exciting.’
She cites the most rewarding and pleasing thing about working at InfoSec as quickly being accepted by the existing team and feeling comfortable around them. She’s also surprised at how quickly she’s managed to pick things up. ‘I was told I’d do that easily but I didn’t believe it at the time as I’d had absolutely no office or IT experience. I’ve surprised myself.’
Finally Charlotte offers an unusual fact about herself. She candidly reveals she was sick over Alan Sugar as a baby. Yuk! And her favourite quote or saying is cited as; ‘When the world seems to get too tough, bring it all back to you.’
