‘Structure, Discipline, and Why I Swear by a 4:00 a.m. Alarm’ was written by Matthew Lannen, the Delivery Team Lead at InfoSec People.
When people talk about discipline, they often picture something rigid or joyless. But for me, it’s the opposite.
Discipline is what gives me freedom. It’s how I stay grounded, keep my priorities straight, and consistently deliver for the people I work with – clients, candidates, colleagues, and, importantly, my family.
If you’re a hiring manager in cyber security or a candidate exploring the tech job market, this article is a window into how my personal structure directly benefits your recruitment experience.
My Day Starts at 4:00 a.m. - Here’s Why
No, I’m not doing it to brag or win some “early riser” trophy. I start my day at 4:00 a.m. because it gives me space. By 4:30 a.m., I’m in the gym. That time is mine – no emails, no pings, no toddler demanding breakfast (yet).
It sets the tone for everything else. I train hard because that challenge first thing teaches me to handle whatever the day throws at me. I’m home by 6:00 a.m., just in time to get my son up and walk the dog before the day officially begins.
Having a young family changes your perspective. I want to be present with my son, not catching up on admin in the evenings or stressing over missed tasks. A disciplined routine means I get the important stuff done efficiently, so I can be fully switched on for both work and home life.
The Power of Process (and Why I Track Everything)
Yes, I’m that person. The one who tracks everything. My workouts. My macros. My daily step count. My weekly goals. My sleep (when I get it).
Some call it obsessive. I call it optimised. And that mindset has become a key part of how I lead delivery at InfoSec People.
Recruitment isn’t just about finding CVs – it’s about building and executing a process that gives people clarity, confidence, and results. From how we take a client brief to how we prep candidates for interviews, every part of the journey is tracked, reviewed, and improved.
Why? Because structure creates consistency. And consistency builds trust.
Why Discipline Helps You
Whether you’re a client or candidate, here’s what that structure means for you:
You Get a Consistent, Reliable Experience
There’s a framework behind every step of how I work – so whether it’s communication, timelines, or candidate delivery, you always know what to expect.
We Move Faster (and Smarter)
Time is precious. When you’ve got systems in place and clear priorities, you don’t waste time spinning wheels. I use tech where it helps and streamline where I can, so we can focus on what really matters – getting results.
I Don’t Drop the Ball
When you’re juggling multiple roles or candidates, discipline isn’t optional. It’s the difference between closing a great hire and letting someone slip through the cracks. I’ll never “wing it” when it comes to your business or career.
It’s Human-First, Not Admin-First
My process helps me reduce admin noise so I can focus on relationships. Whether I’m understanding your team culture or coaching a candidate through final interview nerves, you get the best of my attention because the backend is already handled.
What It All Comes Down To
Discipline isn’t a personality trait. It’s a decision I make – daily.
- To get up early.
- To stick to what works.
- To constantly improve.
- To make room for what matters.
That might mean tweaking our interview prep process after feedback. It might mean adjusting timelines so we don’t rush key stages. It definitely means holding myself (and my team) accountable for what we promise.
Clients trust me with critical hiring decisions. Candidates trust me with their careers. That trust is earned through how I show up – not just once, but consistently.
So whether you’re scaling a security team or looking for your next move in tech or cyber, you can trust that my structured approach isn’t about rigid routines – it’s about giving you clarity, confidence, and results.
Why This Works
- I’ve built a daily routine that gives me a clear mind and a focused workday
- I track and review everything to make recruitment smoother and smarter
- I respect your time by respecting my own structure
- And I don’t believe in shortcuts – just smart, repeatable systems that deliver
Some call it an obsession. I call it caring enough to do it right.
